Sterling Ooty Elk Hill – Where Comfort Meets Culture

While planning our getaway destination, we wanted a hospitality partner which understands our needs. Having experienced warm hospitality and comfortable stays at Sterling Holidays properties in Nainital and Mussoorie in the past, we made our reservations at Sterling Ooty Elk Hill.

As soon as we landed at Coimbatore airport, a car arranged by Sterling Holidays was already waiting for us—our driver had arrived even before our flight had landed. Ooty was still 86 kms away and we hopped on to a three-hour scenic drive.

Nestled amidst the Nilgiri Hills, Sterling Ooty Elk Hill, also awarded the “Best Family Resort,” spans 4.5 acres and offers an uninterrupted view of the stunning Ooty valley. From the moment my family and I arrived, we were welcomed with warmth and hospitality that set the tone for an unforgettable experience. We were welcomed at Sterling Ooty Elk Hill with a traditional tilak and welcome drink by the hotel team and Mr. Naveen Mohan. This was followed by making us wear traditional Toda embroidery shawls, a beautiful touch that symbolizes Sterling’s commitment to empowering the local tribal communities. As we looked around we witnessed the stunning lobby—highlighted by a handcrafted replica of the iconic Toy Train.

All around the property, Sterling D&E (Discoveries & Experiences) impressions captured the spirit of Ooty. From the detailed representation of the Rack & Pinion system of the Nilgiri Mountain Railway to the 13 original station names, it was a lovely celebration of heritage. A replica of a Toda tribal hut and a charming souvenir shop with local goods further enriched the cultural atmosphere.

Our accommodation was a 2-bedroom family suite with a valley view and balcony. Our spacious suite spanning 575 sq. ft was nothing short of perfection—featuring a cozy living room, plush couches facing the TV, and a balcony that opened up to mesmerizing views. The bedrooms exuded comfort, complete with softest pillows, plush mattresses, heaters, a spacious wardrobe, with full-length mirrors—every little detail designed for an indulgent stay. Thoughtfully curated welcome goodies further added a personal touch to our experience. We were delighted to find a welcome platter with chocolates, sweets, dry fruits, and fresh fruits.

The neutral-toned interiors with soothing blue hues created a calming ambiance, but the real showstopper was the view—whether bathed in daylight or illuminated at night, the sight of this 124-room retreat was simply breathtaking.

After settling in and freshening up, we ordered some refreshments in-room— hot tea, fresh lime juice, and assorted sandwiches, which were the best comfort food we needed after our journey.

Dinner that night was at Nilgiri Express, the property’s multi-cuisine restaurant themed after the famed mountain railway. The buffet was a gastronomic treat. We started with a creamy corn salad and a unique bitter gourd & peanut salad that had a delightful crunch followed by fusilli pasta tossed in creamy white sauce. For mains, we tried a variety of vegetarian and non-vegetarian delicacies— noodles, vegetable pulao, tandoori chicken, biryani, and an array of curries paired with assorted Indian breads. The dessert counter was equally indulgent, featuring gateaux, fruit tarts, Victoria sponge cake, and traditional Indian sweets.

We headed back to our plush suite and retired for the day.

We woke up the next morning feeling refreshed and ready to explore. After a slow morning walk around the property and a few golden-hour pictures in the garden, we made our way to breakfast at Nilgiri Express.

It was a lavish spread with an exciting blend of North and South Indian flavors. We savoured crisp dosas, soft idlis, fluffy vadas, Rava upma, and uthappams with freshly ground chutneys and sambhar. Alongside, we also enjoyed aloo and paneer parathas with curd, vanilla pancakes with syrup, fresh-cut fruits, juices, and a selection of garden-fresh salads. What a treat!

Post breakfast, we went on a guided property tour arranged by Sterling Holidays. The Premier Room was compact yet cozy, ideal for couples or solo travellers. We also explored the one Bedroom Suite, a plush setup perfect for anyone seeking a refined retreat. A walk around and we explored the herb garden, where vegetables and herbs like thyme, rosemary, and oregano are grown, was another delightful discovery. Children would love the Kids’ park next door.

Next, it was time for an indulgence! We headed to Subuthi Spa for a relaxing Aromatherapy massage. The tranquil ambiance with soothing music further uplifted our moods, and the therapist expertly worked through our knots with aromatic oils, followed by a steam and shower session. We came out of the spa feeling completely relaxed and pampered.

Our next stop was Discovery Central—a vibrant recreational hub with games like pool, air hockey, carrom, board games, table tennis and more. A separate play area for toddlers ensured fun for guests across all age groups. Another key highlight was archery and shooting which was explored by us. Next to it was the perfect photo opp – ‘I Love Sterling Ooty Elk Hill’ where we posed before heading out for some sightseeing.
With ‘Sterling on the go’ service we got packed fresh sandwiches and juices for us to take along.

In the evening, we headed to Sterling’s another property in Ooty—Sterling Ooty Fern Hill for dinner. Post the delicious treat, we headed back at Sterling Elk Hill.

We retired for the night and we started the next morning with another hearty breakfast at Nilgiri Express. Our indulgence included aloo parathas, uttapams, vadas, poha, roasted potatoes, chhole bhature, and an assortment of cakes, croissants, and other pastries. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and fulfilling though the South India platter deserves a special mention. The beautiful platter came with idli, dosa, vada along with an assortment of sambhar and chutneys….so delicious.

Our day wasn’t planned around Ooty but we were taken to a short drive to explore a beautiful hill station. Sterling Holidays ensured we see every stunning site before we head back home. Once we reached Coonoor, a look around and we witnessed stunning tea estates. It felt as if rolling green carpets lined on the side of the roads. Our first stop was Dolphin’s Nose, a viewpoint with panoramic valley views and a waterfall visible in the distance. Our next stop was something we were looking forward to – the Nilgiri Mountain Railway Toy Train. This UNESCO World Heritage Site chugs through 46 kilometres of scenic beauty, tunnels, bridges, and winding curves—a surreal, nostalgic experience. We got the best seats and were able to cherish the views from every angle.

Dinner that evening was again a buffet feast at Nilgiri Express at Sterling Ooty Elk Hill with dishes like Paneer Kofta Palak, Cauliflower Malli 65, Saffron Paneer Tikka, Pesto Grilled Chicken, Kung Pao Chicken, Fish Salt & Pepper, and delicious sides including Fried rice, Beetroot rice, and Dal Makhani. The dessert section was a paradise with pastries, Indian sweets, and more. Later, we got a glimpse of the romantic private setup arranged for a couple—Sterling goes out of their way to make celebrations special.

Though, we had a surprise awaiting us too at Sterling LOCAL, the resto-bar known for its locally inspired cuisine. Our table was decorated with balloons and special curations from the chef.

Our meal began with compressed watermelon and feta, followed by a Pistachio Almond Chicken Soup and Roasted Apple Leek Soup. Appetizers included Caramelized Chicken Kebabs and Almond-crusted Cottage Cheese. The Poached Pear Salad was a refreshing mid-course dish. For mains, we relished Cream Cheese Stuffed Chicken Breast with poached Vegetables and Paneer Butter Masala with rice and paratha. Dessert was a decadent chocolate truffle and a traditional Indian sweet platter.

After our hearty meal, we headed back to the suite and slept off. The next morning, it was time to bid farewell. We thanked Naveen Mohan, Roshni, Suresh, Senthil, and the entire team for curating such a beautiful stay. Their attention to detail, warmth, and the incredible experiences we had will remain etched in our hearts.

Sterling Ooty Elk Hill is truly a destination in itself. Spread across 4.5 acres, it offers unmatched valley views, a range of luxurious accommodations, a spa, discovery zone, kids play areas, and immersive experiences that celebrate the local culture. With over 124 well-appointed rooms, themed restaurants, and an observatory that lets you watch clouds drift over the town, it’s a perfect getaway for families and couples alike.

As we drove ahead for the journey ahead, we carried not just our luggage, but a bag full of memories. Until next time, Ooty!
